A trip to help refugees in Greece
While the refugee crisis is no longer in the news, it is still an ongoing issue I would like to support. I am, therefore, going to Athens to work with the refugees in and around the city. I am going with Operation Mobilisation (OM), a Christian organisation who seek to bring practical hope to communities around the globe. We will be helping the refugees to meet their needs, educating them and providing any practical and emotional support we can. To be able to go on this trip, I need to raise around £1100, which will go towards accommodation, flights and food, as well as insurance. I have already raised £800, however, so I now only need around £300.
So who am I?
I am a third year Chemistry student with the desire to help those less fortunate than myself. Having been immersed in another culture last year while on a government funded programme in Sierra Leone, I am keen to have my eyes opened further to the struggles facing others. I will be joining the OM team already in Athens and helping with the activities that the team runs, giving encouragement and support where possible. If you want to know more about OM their website is: www.uk.om.org.
What will I be doing?
I will be working alongside the OM team in their efforts to help the refugees and other vulnerable people in and around Athens. This work will include a variety of different activities, from leading educational programmes such as language classes to distributing food and clothing, as well as running women's and children's programmes.
Where will the total money raised go?
The trip has an initial cost of £300. This covers accommodation and resources for the work and activities we are going to do, but does not include any travel costs or food whilst there. The flights are around £500 and I also have to budget for travel around the country. I will be preparing meals myself throughout the trip, for which I will require £300. Together, this comes to £1100. The money already raised will go towards flights, insurance and accommodation, so the money I still need to raise will go towards the food and travel in the country.
Any support you can give will be much appreciated. Donations are amazing but sharing this with anyone you think could support me would also be a massive help. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to get in touch.
